Are solid top wood guitars better than plywood?

Are solid top wood guitars better than plywood?
I can remember my first semi acoustic "f" hole (that's what I used to call it!) It had a solid wood top and after  20 years the sound had changed. Talk about mellow.
That is why I insist that our acoustics have solid wood tops. They sound better.

However, there is a difference between, PLY, Laminated, Solid Top and Solid wood.
Ply wood and laminated wood is the same thing. Basically, 2 or more pieces of wood are  glued together.
This is the cheapest way to make a guitar. Solid Top Guitars use a solid piece of wood. We are not talking here about the sides back etc just the top. It is usually split into 2 pieces and glued together, but  solid all the way through
